Title: Valiant Echo Tech Pro Problems
Post by Transformer on Feb 6th, 2011, 11:21pm

Hi.
Any thoughts on problem appreciated.
4 years old combi-boiler.
Pressure drops to zero soon after heating for rads comes on.
Manually getting hot water by feeding water into system through flow pipe to have bath before work each morning.
Zero leaks on rads but noticed safety pipe thing outside expelling water.
I'm a Chef and don't really have a clue;any advice welcomed.
Many thanks in advance.

Get the expansion vessel checked.

Water in the rads expands when heated. The expansion vessel is designed to deal with that increase. If the expansion vessel is faulty or needs recharging the expanding water has nowhere to go except out of the "safety pipe" (eg through the pressure relief valve).

A quick check invoves pressing the car tyre type valve on the expansion vessel. If water comes out it's faulty. If air comes out it may need recharging. The proceedure for recharging has been covered in previous threads here.

If the expeansion vessel is faulty it might be cheaper to add a new one elsewhere in the system rather than replace the one you have (which may require a boiler strip down).

If it's not the expansion vessel it could be faulty pressure relief valve.

Many thanks for advice Sir.
Forgive my lack of knowledge but where exactly is the expansion vessel located?

Right hand side of the boiler, big red thing. You need to follow the manual for re-charging the vessel first.

You shouldn't need a remote vessel as they are quite easy to get at on this boiler.

Hi mate,

If the pressure is being lost even with the heating off, then you obviously need to look at your pressure relief valve. If the pressure is being lost with the heating on, it clearly points to a problem with the expansion vessel and it needs to be pressurized, and also the pipe which connects the pressure vessel to the manifold needs cleaning out.

I should seek advice from a competent and Gas Safe Registered engineer.
