Title: Booster Pump activating inappropriately Post by TheIdiot on Jul 1st, 2011, 1:20am Hi, apologies if I talk rubbish, I know nowt about all things DIY. I bought my first place (a flat on the top floor of a 5 storey block) a few months ago and have been irritated by an incessant noise which, from what I understand, is coming from a booster pump. Basically, it goes off for about 10 secs every few minutes even when there is no water running. As you can imagine this gets pretty annoying at night as it's quite loud. Any ideas what would cause a booster pump to do this? much appreciated |

Title: Re: Booster Pump activating inappropriately Post by thescruff on Jul 1st, 2011, 10:21am Easy Is it your pump, a pump in another flat, or a communal pump. 1, water is running somewhere. 2, Expansion vessel duff. |

Title: Re: Booster Pump activating inappropriately Post by TheIdiot on Jul 2nd, 2011, 12:16am Hi guys thanks for your help. The pump is in my flat - it's under the sink in the kitchen! I don't know much about plumbing but I get the impression that the previous owner did a bit of a bodge job with both the kitchen and the bathroom. thescruff, if the problem does indeed lie with the expansion vessel, what does this mean with regards to a solution? Does the whole pump need to be replaced or is it an easy fix? |

Title: Re: Booster Pump activating inappropriately Post by thescruff on Jul 2nd, 2011, 12:24am Assuming you don't have any dripping taps. The expansion vessel will have lost it's charge or duff. Can you post a pic, and the make/model. |

Title: Re: Booster Pump activating inappropriately Post by CWatters on Jul 2nd, 2011, 8:43am What they said. Double check things like the WC cisterns for drips. If there are any leaks/drips the pressure in the expansion vessel will fall gradually until the pump kicks in again. Expansion vessels contain a bladder that could be faulty OR it might just need pumping up with a car tyre foot pump. Post make and model of pump/exp vessel as scruff suggests. |
