howaya lads ! first post here but reading through the previous threads im confident of finding an answer !

basically i recieved a call out to a problem with a rad , arse of it completely corroded so had to fit a new one ( heating pipework is all mild steel , but thats a seperate problem ) . problem is the client complaining about fuel consumption from his appliance . he thought he might have a leak somewhere on the oil supply line , but its all accesible and no sign of a leak. i noticed the boiler is a dinosaur and have never come across one like it . its called a "berton ,serie canada ,mod. brev " . just by looking at it i can tell its waaaay oversized. flow and return connections are 2" . found out the man that built the house around 50 yrs ago owned a factory , so i reckon he took the boiler from there . its a average sized 4 bed bungalow , 10 rads. i advised the client , but would really want some info on this boiler to back up my claims . i cant find anything on the internet . has anybody come across this boiler before , any help would be great as im hoping the client will opt for a HE condensing boiler changeover .

Nearest I can google is BERTON CALORTECNICA in Italy.

If the house is 50 years old might be a lack of insulation as well as an old boiler. How much oil is he using?

its defo a berton scruff . closest i have come to finding it on the net is an italian website thats bares the same logo but zero info in terms of boilers .

im in dublin, ireland pal.

and he said he has only moved in just less than a year ago but has gone through the guts of 3 grand + worth of oil ..

as you can see from the pic , the black all over the front of the top door of the combustion chamber. , a little flap lifts up and im pretty sure there should be a piece of glass for viewing the process but thats gone. the whole inside of the boiler house is jet black . theres so many problems with this place but for now i really just want to find out about this boiler

@ CW ... loft insulation is perfect , only redone when they moved in . as for cavity/wall insulation i doubt its up to scratch . id say the pipework isnt helping matters eitheir as the little bit accessible to me was in very bad shape due to corrosion . but unfortunatly he put in all new floors before addressing this problem .

Looking at the carbon monoxide that must be spewing out of that piece of scrap, the best thing you could do is rip it out.

You could save his money and his life.

ive advised him of this scruff but hes hesitant because of money etc . very hard to advise people over here these days as the majority of people assume u are just trying to rip them off . sign of the times unfortunatly.

If he's happy to chuck £3k + in oil at it and put his family at risk, (assumes the boiler isn't in a shed down the garden) there's not a lot you can do, unless you can source the MI's and spares

See if the local fire brigade will give him a Carbon Monoxide alarm :-)
