Title: LED lights causing fuse trip out.
Post by Strum on Sep 9th, 2011, 9:41am

Hi
I have 4x50W halogen spotlights in my kitchen. Replacing them with 4x4W (= to 50W each) causes the lighting circuit breaker on the fuseboard to trip out. It's ok replacing one bulb but with 2, 3 or 4 LED's in, it trips. Please someone tell me why :-[

heeelllooo strum and welcome ;D ;D ;D

i am no expert but some transformers need to be matched to the load so removing 90% off the load may be the problem ??

One faulty LED?

That applies to some electronic transformers but not ordinary wound transformers. Which sort do you have? As a test try it with two halogen and no LEDs (eg two empty sockets). If that trips then it's probably this problem.

12v LED's are available, but rare.  I suspect these are more likely 240v?

I would say check each LED lamp in isolation to make sure you do not have a faulty one.

The LED fittings I use state the maximum that can be used for a type B  and C breaker, although I would have thought four would be fine!!

Interesting. What are the limits and why? Why does the number depend on the MCB type?

Inrush currents caused by the drivers I believe, I will try to track down some instructions.  As I said before doubt its the problem in this case.
