Sorry if that sounds a daft question, but I just need some assurance re a job I've had done. I needed an internal water pipe that went down to my cellar to be shortened and then capped off. I expected the plumber to 'screw' something onto the end where he had cut off the pipe, but instead, he just pushed a cap over it. I'm now concerned that the water (if it always defaults to 'on') will push this cap off and flood my cellar, if however, the water defaults to off then obviously the push on cap is ok. Help!

If the pipe is no longer used it should have been capped off at source so as not to leave a dead leg.

What is the pipe material.

If copper and it's a permanent job then solder cap would have been best. Pushfit can blow off, especially if you have high pressure.

Hi, yes, its copper. So are you saying that the water is defaulted to on then?

There are gadgets on the market that will shut the mains in an emergency, so you can assume if the cap came off you or the cellar would get very wet.

If the cap comes off you'll get wet.

The water is on, if you want it off you have to physically turn it off

I don't play games.

You ask it the water would turn itself off if the cap comes off.

No it wont.

I also said it would be better with a soldered cap if it's permanent.

I even said water regs say the pipe should be capped and removed at source.

There is no "default" - water is either on or off, and the fact your plumber capped the pipe suggests he has left the water feeding this section of pipe ON.
