Just had my first attempt at fitting a new toilet, but even using the shortest pan-connector I was left with a 2" gap between the cistern and wall (oops!).

Has anyone any ideas on how I could fill the gap? I was thinking of a block of wood but what size should I use - has to be 14" x 2" x ? Should I just make it deep enough to get the securing screws in or does it have to go all the way down the back of the cistern?

Have to say, very pleased with the toilet - A Newbury with soft close seat from B&Q (£69)

Would appreciate any advice.

Hello Scruff! Thanks for having a look.

I've uploaded a picture of the soil pipe, which looks like it can't go back any further. This is leaving the gap you can see in the first picture. Not sure what I can do about it...

PS. Please ignore the pipework, need to get back to tidy it up! I was impressed with compression fittings though!

You can get a tighter one than that but it wont go right back so best to build it out.

Sounds like good advice. What kind of material would be suitable to build it out though? Wood be okay?

I would batten the wall then fix a sheet of mdf on the front, to form a column with a shelf on the top.

I think a piece of wood at behind the cistern will look naff.

Did you lift the floor at all to see whats below the floor boards?

If the joists allow, you may be able to move the soil pipe just enough. Which way does the soil pipe run below the boards, or does is pass right though and down the room below?

Hi Lectrician, I live in an upper flat and the soil pipe will also serve the flat below so would be hesitant to disturb the position too much. An intuitive thought all the same!

I'll try to "build out" the gap like The Scruff suggested although I think a joiner might do a better job!

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice and tips I received on ATT's.

I got my toilet problem sorted today after deciding to go with an attempt at cutting an inch off both the soil pipe and pan connector, which gave me the room to push the toilet into better position to secure it to the wall.

Thought I'd leave a photo of the finished job :)

Thanks for the help, I'll be sure to pass on any hints & tips to anyone in the same predicament!
