Hi,
I am fitting a new extractor hood into a kitchen which has a 3 wire cable like you would wire a plug too.
It is going to replace an older style fan which is currently fitted and has a pull string to turn it on and off. (it looks more like the sort of extractor you would get in a bathroom- more like a grill fitted in the wall).

The mains wire is available once the old unit is removed and it is fused so I believe it is correctly wired up. The old fan is not earthed though?

Can I just connect the new hood usind a junction box and do I need to earth it? (there is an earth wire on the new hood?

The cooker hood must have it's earth connected to the earth in the supply cable.

Where is the fuse? You mention pullcord - Is this part of the fan?

Pics above. The old unit that is coming out will leave the mains cable.
Do I just connect the new hood cable with the existing junction box?
Should it have the earth connected as the old unit is not?

Looking at the cable on the new hood - YES - you need to connect the old and new earths together.

You'll need some kind of connection box to join everything up.
I assume you will be venting the air out of the same hole in the wall?

Yes the vent is already there.
I was just unsure on earthing it as the old one had'nt been.
I was going to use the junction box already connected on the old unit.

The need for an earth (or not) is allways determined by the new equipment not the old. It's possible the old unit was designed not to be earthed but the new one appears to need an earth from the photo.

And it is good to earth wires to save from a short circuit in a equipment.
