Title: You have to be a fast reader!!
Post by Kesh on Apr 26th, 2004, 10:55pm

When the news flashes up on the homepage, I barely have time to read what it says  before it disappears & the next message is displayed - hows about leaving it there for a few more sec's?

those who are trade users (not diy) should contact plugwash, Dewy or supersparky through the boards private message feature for access to the trade forums

The banner you are referring to at the top of the page is dependent upon JavaScript being enabled in the browser. If you disable JavaScript then you don't get to see any messages at all.

Though having JavaScript enabled is normal it cannot be depended upon because some people (and companies) fear that JavaScript could introduce viruses on their PC.

Quite right too Andrew, one can wreak havoc using JavaScript.

Agree about the colour and timing of banner though as TT says maybe a marquee is a good idea.

I've been one of the ones who disabled JavaScript as I'm not fond of what can be done with it but found myself succumbing to re-enabling it because so many sites don't work without it (grrrr). The only place I keep it disabled now is on email. I have OE set as a "Restricted site zone".

Drifing further and thinking email, what do so many people insist on sending messages as HTML when plain text is perfectly adequate? If (rare at the moment but I'm planning on a new box) I'm on my Linux box and using KMail, sometimes I find I can't even read the stuff without a lot of effort.

Virus parasites often use HTML because they can verify email addresses with it. They put image markups in the HTML so that when you open the email the image is requested via the Internet, and the request is logged back at base. Leastways that's what someone told me.

I agree about simple text, but there's no catering for the smartarse brigade who think that they have to write their email in pretty prose.

My email client (The Bat! - see http://www.ritlabs.com) automatically switches HTML into simple text. And also replaces any images requested in HTML with placeholders. No scripting language in The Bat for virus writers to get excited about.
