Title: New router
Post by mailee on Jun 2nd, 2004, 11:57am

Hi guys, back again. Can anyone tell me where is the cheapest place to buy a new De Walt 1/2" 1850 watt router?, or indeed if I could still buy an Elu of the same. It must be variable speed and slide off on switch not the safety ones in the handle. Or maybe you could suggest a good substitute. Need a good powered unit. I have a Power pro one and it is sh*t.

I agree with the Power Pro router. Bought one last year, did one kitchen worktop with it, and took it back for a full refund. B&Q were very good about it though, so that was a point in their favour.

I bought a Trend T9 which is a pretty sturdy piece of kit. Worth looking at, though I'm not saying anything against the DeWalt - haven't any personal experience.

Hi
I have just got my Dewalt 625 ek router for £233.  I got it from Alltools here in Sheffield but they price matched DIY Tools .com.

The DeWalt625 is the direct descendant of the Elu
The price is similar at a number of places.
Just found it at £199 then saw that VAT had to be added making it £233
MTS PowerTools
D&M tools was £239 but this includes the fine height adjuster that is about £10 by itself.
Axminster do the CMT for £230
I'll leave others to comment on CMT but I know their router cutters are among the best.
CMT 1850

Thanks Dewey, I had seen the CMT one and thought it looked like the old Elu 177. I was not sure how good it was and weather the similarity was just cosmetic. I know their router bits are top notch but wasn't sure about the router itself. I notice at the moment it has £20 off too. I am still thinking about it. I would really like one of the old Elu's as I have a 96 MOF that I have had since noah's ark so I am well impressed by them.

The Dewalt 625 is the same as that old Elu.
Dewalt bought them & continued manufacturing them with their own name.

mailee, I have a 625 and use it mainly in a router table, with large cutters in a Leigh Jig and for kitchen worktops; it's a big powerful thing. What do you intend to use it for? Do you need the 1/2 inch?

Yes Woodsmith I do need an 1/2" one. I already have the ELU 96 and find it brilliant but am doing more worktops recently and need the powerful router. Thought I may as well buy the best again as the Power Pro one is useless for it. Guide bush was out of round and the switch trigger needs Hercules to operate it for sustained periods!. Still got a whole bunch of cutters with it I suppose. I think it will have to be either the De Walt 625, CMT big orange one, or the Hitachi M12, just need a good price now.  ;) If I could buy a second hand 177 I would snatch their hand off I can tell you.  ::)

Oh I forgot to  mention that the Power Pro also rattles and vibrates more than my old mini so I am worried about getting white knuckle with it!.  ;D

mailee the trouble with the 625 and the 177 is that they are a tradesman's workhorse and likely to be well worn if you buy second hand and unless you are very lucky; going to be a lot more trouble than they are worth.

If you are planning to use it a lot, save up and get a new one.

Yes I see your point woodsmith, I guess I shall just have to soldier on with the Power pro for a couple more jobs and then buy one. I will risk the white knuckle.  :)

I searched all the sites I could find yesterday mailee and there was very little difference between suppliers.

Thanks for that Dewey, Yes it looks like I am going to have to pay around £250 for one. Still if a things worth having it is worth waiting for as my old dad used to say.  ;)

The DW625 has just been upgraded to 2000W and a deeper plunge depth.

Maybe a supplier has the older model on the shelf and are willing to do a deal? Might be worth a few phone calls...

Well guys my mind is made up and I am buying the De Walt one that has been upgraded to 2000Watt. They have an offer at D&M tools including the fine height adjuster for £239. It will also accept all the accessories that I already have being an Elu owner. My wife is buying me it as an early Christmas gift, Sweet thing she is. Kiss Kiss. ;D

Aren't wives sweet?
I still have the Wolf drill my wife bought me for our 1st Christmas soon after our wedding. It has a 5/16" chuck. What luxury when all others were 1/4" in those days.
It still gets used sometimes but the bearings are worn making it noisy and a bit warm if used for too long but I wouldn't be without it.

NOW I know why she wasn't happy that Christmas.
I bought her a set of screwdrivers thinking she might find a use for them with all the work needed around the house. ::)
