I am rewiring one of the sockets at my Grandparent's house soon, in the living room. The cable was nicked by the Builders and it was disconnected.

I cannot spur it off the original socket it was spured off because that already has a spur (2 spurs off 1 socket! Nono!)

So, should Install a ring extention (Run 2 cables out of the exisiting socket, one connected to the terminals of the plug and one crimped to the existing ring?

You can do that, aslong as the existing back box of the socket is large enough!!

Aye should be. Its had 4 in and 5 shouldnt be a squeeze.

the easy thing to do would be to remove the spur cable, put a new one in to supply a fused connection unit then you can loop asmany spurs as you like off of the fused connection unit as you have the fuse to protect the cable.
if im adding sockets, given the choice i add em onto the ring, only exeption is gas hob ignition and the like.
this is the way most sparks will do it

Would do that SS, but they dont want any extra boxes on the walls :(

Just wired new oven in. Running smooth. Had to nick some Earth insulation off old one to bring cables up to scratch (Large ammount of un-insulated Earth)

blimey...sleveing earths have been a reg since the use of rubber...
its not old indian rubber is it??

No.

Its British PVC alright.

They had both Earths (Extractor Fan and Supply) twisted together inside one sleeve. That left a large ammount of unsleeved Earth at the back. So I nicked the one off the old oven, pulled the sleeve off and placed them seperately over each.

Then trimmed the front of each to prevent exposed cable. Insert into contacts. Screw closed. Job done.

Then to the oven (Was easy, standard appliance cable)

Hey Owen, sounds like you did the right thing, if you ever come across earths like that, best to carefully un-twist and sleeve seperatly, it can cause many problems when done together.

seen earths twisted together loads of times - what sort of problems can it cause?

A few issues are firstly it actualy stretches the copper and therefor weakens it and this also affects it's electrical integrity, earthing conductors can then break when detatched or untwisted, this depending how much it has been twisted. it also goes on to make it difficult for fault finding and testing purposes.

If found it should be sleeved seperatly as intended, however it's not the most dangerous thing that can be found, however it is considered bad practise now and sould be totally avoided.
