Title: shower enclosures
Post by DJM on Jun 29th, 2004, 9:20am

SWMBO has decided that we need to freshen up the bathroom but what she wants is not in the budget at this time. So as the bathroom suite is in pretty good condition it will be mostly down to paint and accessories. But, the shower enclosure is knackered and needs replacing.
Due to it's position, and cost constraints we will have to replace like with like. The tray is china and square 800x800. The enclosure is a corner entry with sliding doors. My questions are

1) where can I get a reasonably priced corner entry enclosure, preferably with the frame in sliver finish.
2) The old enclosure is fixed to the top of the shaower tray with silicone sealeant, how do I safely and without damage remove this?
3) Any hints as to what I should look out for in fitting a new enclosure

Judging from your replies, I take it that you follow your own advice, which results in the spouting of excrement evident in your responses! :P (  >:( )  :P

scrape the sealant off carefully using stanley knife / paper scraper - remove residue with rag and white spirits

Got the enclosure today and bought some silicone sealant remover at the same time. So will be having some "fun" mixed with a lot of Anglo-Saxon phrases I suspect tomorrow.

Will let you know whether the sealant remover works.

You need to leave the remover on for quite a long time, try to let it sit overnight.

Wish I had read this before starting. Well I left it for just over 2 hours as teh instructions said and frankly it was useless.

Old enclosure runners were so strongly held on I resorted to an angle grinder to cut the runners carefully into smaller sections and worked on each one at a time.
Probably should have taken  PVMs original advice and used the Kango :)

Of course having got the old channel out with only very monor damage to teh glaze on teh tray, I found out why the channel was held on so tightly and possibly why it leaks. The shower tray edge is not level.

I don't mean it undulates a bit, I mean it has a peak the size of Everest about 2/3rds along one side. :o :'( As a result the new shower enclosure rocks. Think I should have bought shares in silicone sealant company before fitting.

Oh well it's in place now and once the sealant's dry, we'll see if it leaks.
