This seems to be a popular subject at the moment.
I am also looking to give up my job as a multiskilled Tech and move into Building maintenance. I was originally mechanically biased but after many years of training/courses I am now considered compotent enough to install, fault find and repair on 3 phase and control systems.
What qualifications would be necessaty to work on domestic wiring such as replacing fuse boards, spurs, lighting circuits and garage installations? I would like to be considered professional and not have my work checked/certified.
If there are any other trades reading this what is needed to install plumbing(not gas), replace windows and doors etc. I am looking into starting up in a few years so have plenty of time to study and are currently renovating my third house house so have a reasonable ammount of experience at the sort of work needed for that but would like to become my own boss.
Any thoughts?

Hey Mice, what qualifications do you have electricaly wise at the moment?, C&G 2360 Part 2 would allow you to do all of the domestic electrical work you will need.

Thanks for the reply,
I have looked through all the City & Guilds certs that I have got over the years and they don't seem to have any specific numbers, I can only assume that they are the modules specific to the requirements as requested by my company ie. motor testing and installation, control systems, Plc programming etc.. One of the first courses was a three week domestic installation training module but this was just used as an introduction to basic electrical principles such as ohms law etc.
If I were to do 2360 part 1 & 2 at night school would this be ok to carry out work and issue certs, also will I need to do the 16th edition training course?
All help appreciated.

Hi Mice

Problem is due to new goverment plans that bring Electrical work into the building regulations, you would need to have 2391 (Testing & Inspection) to be able to self certify that your work is safe etc etc, I would think you would need 16th eddition also, the certification schemes appear to want this. If you did the 2360 Part 1 and 2 & then went on to gain the 2 short courses 238\239 then you would be able to do everything that you need to do.

However funding for the 2360 Part 1 & Part 2 course is due to be axed this september, I expect there to be a few places that still run them, but it may be worth asking first as the new C&G 2330 course is due to take over, It wouldnt be any good to get half way trough the course to find out no more part 2 and you have to complete part 1 again.

Thanks again for your help, do you know if the 2360 1&2 or the 2330 1&2 have to run over a set period or can you work through them as fast as possible then sit any pratical assesments or exams as I have 18 days off each month so plenty of spare time.

firstly the 2330 does away with it being in parts I believe, and therefor it's just done as one course, the 2360 part 1 can be done full time or part time

1 day a week part time over 2 years
3 days a week full time over 1 year

part 2 is 1 day a week for 1 year -
days or evenings your choice.

I thought the C&G 2381 16th edition course was a refresher course just for people who done there 236 part 1 and 2 before the 16th edition came about.

It shouldnt need to be done if you are taking your 236 now or in the near future

I took 2381 without taking any other course. According to the NICEIC web site I'm now considered a fully qualified sparky (if I come up with the readies they are asking for...).

Just about to sign up for my 2391 course.

Afraid not tellondon, the BS 7671 course specialises in exactly what it says, BS 7671, and navigating around and using the book, 2360 regardless of time is for some people not considered enough without supplementing that with 2381, however most colleges will accept you on to 2391 without having done 2381.

And Andrew you will see that NIC wants more than just 2391
