Title: New sill
Post by HippieChippie on Jul 13th, 2004, 6:38pm

Hi Guys

I'm helping a mate fit a new sill to his french doors. The old rotten one (which looks like a previous repair)  was screwed down but we're gonna put dpc under replacement sill and there's not much room for cement - so whats the best way to secure it?

Hi,

You can put a dpc under the sill and still screw it down through the dpc. Can you screw it into the door frame?Difficult to say without seeing what you have to screw it into.

Thanks sussed it, gonna fix into frame as you suggest.

I thought screwing through a dpc was not on cos it'll let damp through or am I wrong?

Another question he's got a box sash window upstairs with a badly rotten sill, is it possible to remove and replace sill in situ or are we gonna have to take the whole thing out?

HippyChippie,
Where do get all these nightmare jobs from ;).If youare lucky, and it just the front of the sill that is rotten i would suggest that chop it back to sound wood, and replace with new timber.
Are the window reveals plastered up to the window, this will prevent you taking the window out. :)

Screwing through the dpc is not ideal but often it is the only option.

When I've screwed down thru a DPC I've tended to put a good portion of mastic goo around the screw so that there's no chance of moisture penetrating at that point.

Also bear in mind that these screws should NOT be regular steel because they will rust. Use stainless steel or brass screws instead.

the idea of dpc,
is toooooo stop damp rising  ;D. Water molicules in a damp situation will not attack in any great strength where you have driven a screw thru.the dpc.
Have to agree with Handmac doh, do not use screws of the rusting type :)
