Post by greg on Jul 16th, 2004, 6:56pm

whats the advantage of a spindle moulder over a router table?

Cheers

spindle moulder is far far better
greater selection of cutter
mixing and matching the cutters on each side
gives you limitless combinations 10 cutters
dozens of combinations
you can alter cutters and blanks

Spindle moulders normally are much quieter as they have induction motors which are also more powerful than a router thus allowing larger amounts of wood to be removed per pass.

You will have to buy a cutter block to suit the S.M. but a set of cutters & limiters works out around £15.00 per profile (Limiters are now required for all hand fed machines)of which there are about 200 different ones available

The main disadvantage of a S.M. is that the cutters last no time atall in MDF but give a superior finish on solid timber unless you can afford the TCT cutters which range from £1-200 a time.

If you are thinking of buying a S.M. go for one with a sliding table as this is very useful for profile & scribe doors and Tennons.  I have a Kity combination machine which has saw, spindle, planer & thichnesser all in one which saves workshop space but can be a hassel changing from one function to another.

Thats why spindles have much better work hold downs and guards than your average router table, just up to you if you use them depends what value you put on your digits.

Jasonb.
You can thank the HSE for that, without them  people, many more people would be maiming themselves everyday in machine shops /building sites.Funny, really i have read posts on this forum moaning about them. :)

You could get the best of both worlds by investing in a Felder with tilting spindle and optional router shaft for the spindle and the smoothest sliding table on the market, just wait for the right lotto numbers!

Jason, have you seen the stock clearance at Kity?
Spindle mouler boxed set at £99.99 instead of £249.

spindle moulders are far more powerful, safer and better to use.....but, for the diy, the cost of tooling is prohibitive.  Router cutters are far cheaper, easier to set up and often more flexible than spindle tooling.  When you are only using a cutter occasionally, then the costs of spindle tooling is uneconomic.

Eg.  I recently purchased an adjustable slot cutter for a job to cut 16mm grooves.  At £140, I could buy 10 router cutters.  But I know I will use this adjustable cutter once or twice a month for ten years.

Dewy, thanks for that, I can see a few purchases comming on.

PK, as I said above the specialist tooling is pricy but at £15.00 for a set of knives & limiters spindles arn't that expensive to tool up. I agree that for the average DIYer or keen amature a router and decent table would be the better option.

On the question of router tables, I'm gonna replace the (well worn) top on my home-made table.... was thinking of using 30mm ply, consisting of a 12mm and 18mm sheet glued/clamped together to eliminate any cupping, not that there should be much... sound OK?

You'd probably be better using 18mm MDF with a laminate top then route out for something like this  router plate to give you maximum cutter movement.
MDF is stable & less likely to warp. If you do laminate a top don't forget to laminate both sides or it will bow.

So 24mm MDF it is :D with the VERY nice Trend insert to replace my present insert - thankyou very much Dewy for linking that as last time I priced up the Trend it was a lot more money.

Mike - Gawd she's gonna kill me, more money spent on toys....

Doc, have you seen the router table tops made on new Yankee Workshop or Johns Workshop out of MDF on H&L ?
The second one was made to take a Jessem Rout-R-Lift but that plate is £150

Thanks Dewy...

Have seen the NYW one but not John's..... gonna go off on a rant here LOL, but I don't like either of em tbh.....

One of them tries <poorly> to disguise his Loo-ee-zz-anna accent and, frankly, has the worst technique I've ever seen using hand tools -Norm with a hammer, FFS, makes me laff every time I see it, and the other has Ferrari driving friends and only appears to use MDF!!

Jeez, someone give us a decent program where real people make real projects using shed tools at minimal expenditure and point out the differences between someone working in their back yard with tools from B&Q to a pro in a fully equipped 'shop.... that would be good.

Oh, and keep the guards in place - for photographic purposes.

Mike.

PS And no Trend mortise & f##kin tenon jig plz....

The advantage with the Jessem Rout R Lift is that once you fit your router to it you can forget about setting the height as you normally would. It has a handle in the plate that you wind the router up with then it recesses out of the way when in use.
