if i add a new circuit to a domestic property say a shower

when completing the electrical installation certifiacte do i fill in the details of all circuits, lights , ring main etc but leave the test results blank and just comple the new circuit test details or do i have to comple all the test results

also the schedule of items inspected, dose this just refear to the new circuit or all the installation
for example the box to tick for SELV as the new circuit dose not contain SELV do i put n/a or if the say bathroom has SELV lighting do i have to trick the box to say it has been inspected and is OK

Hi Mark

Can I ask if your an electrican or just doing some diy work?, The certificates should only be filled out by competent persons for safety reasons and this is why I ask.

If your adding a shower this would need a installation certificate with schedule of test results & a schedule of inspections to make it complete, the shower will need to have all the 16th tests done to it, and certificate will just cover the shower, same with test results & inspections.

thanks for yor reply

i am a quified electrician and just awaiting to do the 2391 course

could i ask you

so if install a shower or another ring main for example
when competing the schedule of items tested

the box for SELV i would i put n/a even though there might be selv lighting installed but because the new circuit i have installed dose not contain any SELV i would still put n/a or do i have to check any SELV and put a tick in the box

hey Mark

If your certificate is only covering the shower, then only the relevant boxes need be ticked or marked, they will be all N/A except for if theres is a RCD protecting the shower and bonding and other applicable things.

hope 2391 goes well for you, get in touch if you want some past papers & we may be able to help, college centres usualy will give you some past papers mind :)

On the subject of testing certificates,
when i complete the 2391 course and pass the exam as im down to do the exam in October, will that allow me to issue a certificate of testing myself?
also where do you get blank certificates from?

Yea it will allow you to issue certificates but you wont be able to install a new electrical circuit in the new year unless you inform building control or join a domestic installer scheme

Hey spot, as Tellondon said, after January 2005, you will either need to be registered with a self certification scheme e.g. NIC EIC, or pay to have building control in to inspect your work.

Until then you can issue the certificates as long as your competent to do so and have the right test gear etc.

just 1 more point im not sure about

going back to the original question at the start with a new shower circuit

when completing the schedule of items inspected

what do i put in the box for continuity of ring final conductors do i put n/a or if i put a tick then i will have to test the ring circuit as well as the shower circuit

Hey Mark

The shower and ring circuits are two different things, the column for ring is for the ring continuity as you say, and this is only for when you do a ring circuit, anythnig else lights, shower, cooker etc you should put a dash or a line through to show its n/a, you need to make sure you do your r1+r2 for the shower, and this will be marked in the column for it, the rest insulation resistance, impedance tests are all straight forward enough.

Oh my mistake, what I posted above is for your schedule of test results, for the schedule of inspections put n/a for everything that does not apply to the shower circuit alone.
