Title: I might be building a toilet extension...
Post by warreng on Sep 22nd, 2004, 1:36pm

ok, ive only been at college for 4 days (2 days a week) and have been practicing brickwork.... and there is this guy who wants someone to finish off his toilet extension next to his kitchen (half of it is done).

So me and my mate are going to do it this week, even though we have never done a real job before, but we ahve looked at it and from what hyas already been done it looks crap, they havent done any pointing on the joints and maybe it isnt level. I dont think the guy is that bothered really.

He's done a wall with a gap in between for damp proofing, do you require this?
Also if you could give me any tips before i do it...thanks

That doesn't make sense to me. A damp proofed wall (as I understand it) is one where a waterproof membrance is laid between courses of bricks - usually up to about 6 inches above ground level. So water can't "climb" the brickwork 'cos it hits a barrier which it can't cross.

A "wall with a gap between" suggests a cavity wall. That's different to damp proofing (again, as I understand it). That's more for insulation purposes, a bit like double glazing sandwiching a layer of air to keep down thermal and noise conduction. It may contribute to damp proofing, I don't know, but if I were looking at damp proofing a wall I wouldn't start by building a cavity.

ok your right, its probably cavity... its a gap in between the walls, with wires to hold them together and theres also that white stuff for protection in between....

That white stuff is cavity wall insulation material. I'm surprised you can see it 'cos that usually gets squirted in after the brickwork has been finished (unless it's some sort of sheet that is added as the bricks go in).

I believe there are rules and regulations about cavity wall construction. You'd have to check with the local building control officer I think.

The concern I would have is that if you do some brickwork for the guy and at some later point he comes to sell the house (like next week!), if it's not up to scratch then he could be after you when the buyers surveyor pulls it up.

Warrenk,
Not much of the week left to get started on this extension. It might pay you to leave it until next week and hopfully get in another 2 days at college before you start . The ratio for mixing mortar is,1tablespoon of cement ,3tablespoons of sand,4 tablespoons of water.Mic this up with a pinch of salt ;)
