Title: Pointing out a problem Post by woodsmith on Sep 30th, 2004, 9:08pm I've been out to a house today, the customer is complaining about water penetration coming in seemingly from above a window. I've had a good look and can see nothing wrong with the window or the fitting of it but the pointing above looks very suspect. A lime mortar has been used for the brickwork and is now very crumbly in places. My question is; if it is to be repointed is it best or acceptable to point with cement based mortar or is it going to be better to use lime mortar? Thanks Keith |
Title: Re: Pointing out a problem Post by Robbo on Sep 30th, 2004, 10:49pm Have had a debate over the use of lime mortar putties on d.i.y. not (building.. r.e blown bricks) recently which may be of intrest to you and help you decide on an appropriate approach, sorry dont know how to do a link. Me!if it is a small isolated area so would certainly 4:1 sand cement weather point. |
Title: Re: Pointing out a problem Post by woodsmith on Oct 1st, 2004, 8:56am Thanks Robbo I used a sand /cement mix but was a bit concerned if it would be OK. Can't find the diy not debate, perhaps I'm on the wrong bit. If I want to post a link I go to the page I want to link, highlight the address by right clicking it, choose copy, go to the post I want to write then just paste it into the post. There may be an easier way? http://www.diynot.com/ This is where I was looking and couldn't find a builders section. Keith EDIT... slight problem here as we can't write d!ynot or have it included in a hyperlink :-/ |

Title: Re: Pointing out a problem Post by woodsmith on Oct 1st, 2004, 9:34am Thanks Jason, got the email and the link. http://www.d1ynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13006 Don't know why I couldn't find it. ??? Having read this, I think in preference, I'd use a lime mortar. |
Title: Re: Pointing out a problem Post by Dewy on Oct 1st, 2004, 6:50pm Lime mortar will move and take in water but using cement mortar on top will seal the moisture in. The cement mortar is then liable to blow out. Many old buildings have had problems when cement mortar was put on top of lime mortar. |
Title: Re: Pointing out a problem Post by woodsmith on Oct 2nd, 2004, 9:32am What about a cement/hydrated lime /sand in 1:1:6 proportions? would that still let the wall breathe? |
Title: Re: Pointing out a problem Post by Robbo on Oct 2nd, 2004, 2:11pm In regards to the original posting If i read it correctly and it was just a very small and specific area that may be letting in water then sand cement would not i.m.o. cause any concern as their is a whole mass of wall to breathe, however if you were meaning pointing the whole wall then yes lime putty would be a must. B.T.W. I am legs akimbo over on d.i.y. not, cheers for that linking advice woodsmith will try that! ;) |
Title: Re: Pointing out a problem Post by woodsmith on Oct 2nd, 2004, 2:23pm Thanks Robbo, yes, I just pointed a small section in cement mortar, I only went round because she said her window was leaking. If she needs it completely repointing I'm not the man for the job anyway, but like Big All I just like to know what's what; and I wanted to make sure I hadn't cocked anything up. Legs akimbo :o ::) ;D ;D ;D What made you choose that? |
