Title: What flange to use Post by jasonB on Nov 2nd, 2004, 7:37pm I thought that I may have problems with this pump install. It is in a flat, the CW tank is directly above the HW cylinder, level of water in tank 7FT top of cylinder 4FT approx. Supplies from tank 28mm & 28mm until reduced to each outlet. Elbow out of top of cyl, 300mm of horizontal pipe then Tee, up to vent down to pump. Fitted a whole house pump which is sucking in air through the vent. There is very little room between the top of the cyl and tank base so would an essex flange be the way to go? Not fitted one of these before, anything to look out for, the cyl is approx 25yrs old. Thanks, Jason |
Title: Re: What flange to use Post by billythekid on Nov 2nd, 2004, 10:23pm sounds like a good idea to me if ya cant raise the cistern. you need to get the right type, flat (E1) is the one you want in 1". Just be careful when cutting the hole for it, but you shouldnt have any trouble, dont drop it inside the cylinder! they give you a wire holder tool to keep that from happening. The rubber washers in an essex flange are suitable for water temp up to 60deg C for temperatures higher than this up to 90deg C get the EPDM washers and for up to 120deg C SX washers. Hope thats the info ya want Btk |
Title: Re: What flange to use Post by jasonB on Nov 3rd, 2004, 5:20pm Thanks BTK, picked one up thismorning, see what you mean about not dropping bits in the cylinder. Just one point, should the pipe carry on through the flange into the cylinder and have the end cut at an angle? Thanks Jason |

Title: Re: What flange to use Post by thescruff on Nov 3rd, 2004, 8:37pm At 25 years old I would recommended a new cylinder, cant be worth playing with the old one when it's likely to go at any time. at the very least you should make the client aware of the fact. An essex flange is the only real choice in my opinion, other than a dedecated tapping. scruff |
Title: Re: What flange to use Post by JerryD on Nov 3rd, 2004, 8:57pm Jeez, what toothpaste do you use :D Back to topic...... if you get a new cylinder, order one with the tappings you want already factory fitted. No need then for the Essex. |
Title: Re: What flange to use Post by jasonB on Nov 4th, 2004, 4:41pm Thanks for the comments guys, I was a bit worried about the possibility of scale on the inside of the cylinder, it's in a hard water area (Epsom, Surrey). Will have a word with the client and see what he wants to do, Although I have replaced a couple of cylinders I tend to stear clear of this type of work. Jason |
