Hi all, just came over from SFD as its shut all the time!

I've had a cheapy 1/4" router for 2 years and use it for basic stuff. I rent a 1/2" router for worktops.

I'm thinking of buying a makita 3612 from D&M tools http://www.dm-tools.co.uk

Its the same price as SFD, but you get the case plus a trimmer as well!

How do you rate this router? To be honest I'm only going for this one as the rest of my kit is makita. Advice on tables would be good also.

I only do basic stuff with wood, but I'm now a dab hand at worksurface fitting. I'm going to order a book on routing to try and learn more. Any recommendations on a book would be good also.

hello handyman,
the 3612 c is trigger operated,not sure if this is usable
with a router table :-/
it could be possible,
as for worktops etc,yes good router.
i have the 3612C and the 3612B (an earlier version that doesn't have the trigger switch)
have you had a look at the dw 625ek around �220 mark?

No havent looked at any other ones, cos to be honest I dont know what to look for!

Is the dewalt good then? Would that be the one you would buy if you needed another?

Can anyone tell me if any can be trigger and also be mounted on a table?

I have the DW 625 EK and it's fantastic ;) ;D would definately recommend it

Welcome to the forum, its a lot better on here than s/fix, at least it's not down all the time :D

I still use an Elu MOF177E, Elu became part of De Walt and is very similar to the 625EK, You could also take a look at the CMT which is available from Axminsters

I use the Trend Craftsman table which works quite well, have a look at Axminsters & Rutlands for some others.

Hi Handyman welcome to the forum,

Unless they have improved it since the last time I saw one the 3612 has a non locking power switch so if you wanted to use it in a table you would have to start taping the switch up :(, also has a pretty poor depth stop arrangement. Like coggy I have the DW625EK and can't fault it and would buy another tomorrow if it packed up.

I use a DeWalt 2000 router table which is lightweight and portable if I wanted one just for the workshop I would look for something with a bit more mass.

As for books, I haven't found books so usefull with power tools, Axminster sell DVDs and videos; I would think they would be more help.

Thanks for the advice, will get the dewalt next week and get back to you. Seems dmtools is the cheapest at �220 with a fine adjuster included.

just noticed at the bottom of the dm tools page a deal if you get everything together.

that's all the 1/2 inch routers,i won't start on 1/4 inch ;D
as you already have a trimmer,the dewalt is the one,

A number of routers now have a safety switch so it stops if you let go of it.
The Trend T9 has a trigger lock as an extra if its used in a table.
A lot of people buy a outer only to find that they cant lock the switch for table use so start taping the switch or use other means.
The DW625 is the real workhorse for many chippies.

Do a search for "Woodworking with the Router"... sorry I can't remember who the author is, but it's probably the best book on routing available. I got my copy from Amazon and can guarantee it's money well spent.
