Just a few questions from an amateur;

Are expansion tanks ever mounted in the attic so that they can trap all the system air at the highest point or are they mounted next to the boiler for a specific reason?

Has anyone here ever heard of an auto bleeder device for hydronic heating systems? If so, how do they work in practice?

Don't know about auto bleeders, but expansion vessels are not for trapping air but vessels that allow the water in an unvented CH system to expand when it gets heated. As such they are better mounted near to the boiler than some distance away. An expansion vessel is basically a bag inside the canister.

Hey guys, just because you folks are in the UK it doesn't mean that I can't learn something from you. Actually, I find that because hydronic heating has been around so very much longer in the UK that you technicians know a heck of a lot more, generally, than the average technician over here.

And don't worry about the Canadian accent, eh, because it's the only way I know how to talk, eh, but, I'm more than willing to learn your language because it sounds so very jolly and distinguished when spoken.

Besides that, if it wasn't for the excellent and helpful advice of the good folks here I may not have gotten my new boiler up and running so well. It's in, all piped and operating better than I ever expected and at a price I could afford. But, as a precaution, I will have a certified and licensed technician come in and inspect my workmanship on the off chance that I missed something that could make the install a bit better.

Scruff, or anyone else that may be interested, I could forward some digital pics of my completed boiler install if you would like to see what they look like over on this side of the pond or if you just wanted to poke fun at my amateur handywork. LOL

Thanks again guys for all your help and expert guidance.

Just want to say thanks for posting those pics.

I got word this morning that my flo check valve will be in on Wednesday or Thursday (it was supposed to be here last Friday) and I'll cut the supply pipe open to install it at that time. I believe the best place to locate it is at the left of the 90' on the supply side of the one pipe loop.

I'll be adding some plastic pressure relief valve drain pipes and I'm going to insulate all the exposed hot water pipes.

The only thing I'm not sure how to do is to set the bypass valve. I was warned by the manufacturer that the return water temp must be above 140' F/60'C otherwise damage could occur to the boiler in time.

Do I just use a pyrometer on the return pipe and open the bypass valve until the return water temp is at 60'C?

P.S. The flow check is used to prevent gravity circulation isn't it? Once the circ. pump comes on it opens the flow check, then closes when the circ is not running? Is that what keeps the water temp in the boiler up for DHW while not raising the house temp?

The pipework looks pretty tidy.

Why, Why, Why does everybody on the otherside of the atlantic insist on using wirenuts to terminate cables though !!

Lets see, take a solid (soft) copper or (cheap nasty brittle) aluminium conductor, twist it until its on the verge of breaking and stick a little plastic hat on it.

Genius !

Somebody send em some crimps, or (cant believe im saying it) even some terminal strip.
