I`ve managed to aquire a diesel engine from an oil tanker ((10,000hp)ocean going) and want to use it as a generator, trouble is the starter motor keeps blowing the fuse on my ring main (replaced it 10 times now with no luck).
Do you think I need a bigger fuse if so what size is good.

ehh....a blowing fuse is a sign of a fault.

When you say engine, do you mean generator??

If it is a generator, how have you hooked it up to your ring main??

DO NOT use this 'engine' again until you have received professional advice.......

Are you sure the "starter" motor isn't the generator's excitor? ;)

Well I've looked in my Haynes Repair Manual for 10,000hp Ocean Going Oil Tankers and it says you should use a 32 amp fuse, try that and see how you get on.

Only 10,000HP? That's a yacht engine (Bugatti make them that big, 112 cylinder radial affairs)

Big tankers run at 37,000 bph or so - per engine :o

Imagine hand cranking one of those...
