I am having trouble with a C&G 2360 question. It concerns a conversion of a carport to a workshop. All the building construction has been done before the electrical works starts. I am asked to explain the resposablility of the electrical contractor with respect to the Electricity supply regs & the Building regs.
I have looked at Electricity supply regs but find them difficult to understand and they seem to be about the suppliers responsablity. I didn't think the building regs applied at all until part P comes into force.
Any oppinions, advice, or links to other info would be greatly appriciated.

Supply Regs:

You have to ensure the electricity supply is adequate for the intended extra use.

Building Regs:

You have to ensure you don't bridge cavity walls, and ensure you put top hats on downlights (if there where any in the workshop ;D)

All I can think at the mo.

The contractor will have to -

Ensure that any new electricial installation in the carport complies with BS7671, which should then in turn comply with the ESQR regs, There should be specific references to earthing requirements for what will be classed as outdoor supplies.
You don't mention the specifics of the question but a few pointers might be along the lines of -

Building regs - any cables coming from the existing house thru the wall to the new car port must be firestopped.
Cables must not come into contact with any other building materiels which could damage them - polystyrene insulation for example.
Cables must not compromise any acoustic cladding.
Cables must be mechanically protected.

Do a search for 'building regs' Parts A to M - its all there if you care to look hard enough

I have started to download the building regs from the ODPM so I can search.

I am actually on part 2 of the 2360.

Ok David

You may find the seach function on Adobe/Acrobat reading usefull by typing in electrical terms or phrases and seeing what it brings up.

I use this alot to find the electrical sections as the building regulations are quite large and can consume quite alot of time.
