got BIG tv, which can be connected to the computer so you can use it as a monitor- great for movies ect

problem is, you have to disconnect the monitor cable and swap over, - pain in the arse!

what would be good would be if i could leave it perminantly connected, do they do splitters? or would i be better off instaling a second card and saving settings with it? at the moment, once connected i have to ajust screen size aswell as it jumps from a 17inch CRT to a 48 inch plasma ::)

Many graphics cards come with 'TV out' so you can use the TV as a monitor and come with a din socket to connect to the TV.
Some have 'TV in' so you can use the computer monitor from a TV antenna, VCR, satellite system etc.

Yup, most cards have an s-video out, which gives high-end quality. The s video socket on the card has more pins than required by a standard TV usually, but the bog standard s-video will still fit.

I had a lead supplied with the graphics card when I bought the PC.
I've never used it because the TV and 'puter are in different rooms and they only supplied a short lead.

they sell a kit at tesco. We got one, gold plated ends, comes with the s-video out to scart and audio to scart too with an adapter. Works brilliant, good when the screensaver comes on! lol
One thing, it doesnt work on my video card only on missthekids, hers is newer, mine doesnt have the video out sockets.

Yes, if you want audio aswell, you need an extra cable, as s-video is image only.

Some screens don't allow s-video in via the scart, they convert it to composite inside, which isn't always as clear.

Whats it like watching videos?? I have an s-video out, but havn't used it yet, as I dont like the idea of spending money on a lead I may not use again if the quality is crap!

Quality is fine, you need to set up a second monitor, then adjust the resolution for best fit, but you can watch dvds on it no problem, the lead is only a few quid so you havent bankrupted yourself if it doesnt work too well, ours works great, lonnnng leads too, the PC is in a different room from the telly and reaches fine. The one from tesco comes with the red and white plugs and the s-video, they all plug into the back of a scart adapter, then back to the PC, s-video and speakers( Audio out would probably work too) the red and white come together to one plug at the PC side. so two plugs out from PC, to three at adapter to scart. If the TV had ss-video it could just plug straight in i suppose without the scart plug.

I popped into Sainsburys yesterday and they were selling DVD recorders at £99 a shot.

Pricing are coming down methinks.....

I have a stereo audio cable between my HIFI in the lounge, and the computer, as I use the computer as a 'jukebox' for parties etc. So all I really need is an s-video lead. I would need a 20m one, not cheap!

I wish I had put that able in when I put the audio ones in!! I didnt think!!

They are going the same way as the VCRs did when they became popular during the battle between Philips, JVC (VHS) & Sony (Betamax)
Dixons has already announced that it will no longer stock VCRs owing to the upturn of DVD sales.
What the hell am I going to do with my 300 cassettes when I cant get a VHS machine?
Probably the same as my old Philips VCR tapes that cost approx £17 each 25 years ago.

I am NOT kidding when I say that my mother-in-law has just been out and bought 3 VCR's (cheap ones).

She wouldn't know what to do with out a VCR!

I paid £499 for my Philips VCRLP in 1978 when the price had come down from £750.
The video quality was much better than either betamax or VHS but lost (like Betamax) because JVC had flooded the America market with their VHS machines.
Within a year they went to £199 then 6 months later to £99.
The following year they were being sold from warehouses for £49 which was less than the cost of a new video head.

i take it she will be buying digi boxes in a few years time to allow here to carry on recording when the anolouge transmiters are turned off ;)
