Title: Board for consumer unit
Post by John   Davies on Dec 24th, 2004, 10:56pm

A question regarding our rewire.

Are there any recommendations about the mounting of consumer units?

Our current Wylex unit is mounted on a purpose made board.  The MEB in its wisdom put its meter slap bang in the middle of this board meaning that it is impossible to mount a larger MCB unit without extending the board (or having the meter moved....)

Providing I leave an air gap behind as standard, is it o.k. to extend the mounting board?  If so, is  boil and heatproof  ply o.k., or should I use floorboarding or similar, as in our present house?

Once I know where I am,  I can then extend the board and mount the  unit, and I am all done before part P comes in - then in the New Year I can get a pro. to test the installation and connect the tails and commission the whole thing.

Thanks - and a Merry Christmas.

Hello John

My recommendations are Hard Wood or a Fireproof proof type board, this should be stood off from the wall to avoid damp

However it is ok to mount the consumer unit onto a soild wall if you wish

A Merry Christmas to you too  :)

Hi John
You will probably find that the REC own the bit of wood and they get very protective about it. That will be why they have used up all of the Space

Yup, all new CU's can be mounted onto ANY surface....flammable wood included.

The REC do get funny about the 12inches!!
