Title: 12v 14v 18v 24v?
Post by Dusty on Jan 17th, 2005, 9:13am

Thinking of replacing my B&D cordless Drill/Driver with a DeWALT, "BUT WHICH ONE" ???
I appreciate the more volts, the more power (and money) :o
But which one do most 'DeWALT buying pros' go for and why? ;)
Thanks :)
Dusty :D

I agree with big all.

I've got quite a few dewlt cordless tools. All 18 volt.

Worth every penny.

The volts are important, but so are the amps.

For a drill 18v is my choice, and minimum 1.7Ah to give reasonable service life.

For cordless 'screwdrivers' torque is also important.  Try pushing in 150mm x 6mm screws all day with a low torque machine and you'll soon know what I mean  ;D

I currently use Panasonic 15.6v cordless screwdrivers, these have 3 amp/hr batteries and recharge in 20 minutes. Very high torque tool.

Cordless sds I use Bosch 24v.

a fellow panasonic man! :)
i have been raving about these for a while now.
for daily use don't knock 12 volts
i use these and they are very light and comfortable.
here is a link to a review of 12 volt drills.
check out the drilling of holes test for the panasonic.
against the likes of festool, dewalt etc ::) ::)

A lot depends on the work that you will be mostly doing. I'm in the workshop mostly, ocassionally on site (my customers' kitchens). I drive most of my screws with a Metabo powergrip (4.8V). For drilling I mostly use my Metabo 12V. I picked up an 18V DeWalt the other day, and the weight was outrageous. Only buy such a heavy unit if you really need that much power.
The main thing about cordless drills etc is to buy good stuff. I don't have one myself, but I'm told that Panasonic is the best

if i was starting out afresh i would concider the bosh better value for money ive got the drill and circular saw

http://www.itslondon.co.uk/SearchResults.aspx?criteria=bosch%2024v

like the dewalt 18v the bosch24v comes in quite a selection but obviously a bit heavier
they both do naked [without charger or batterys]to top up your tool collection without the full cost

and hey john if you thought the 18v dewalt was heavy you will love the bosch 24v circular saw :o ;D ;)

big_all ;D
Thanks for the advice ;)
Went for the Bosch Pro (Blue) :o
Couldn’t afford the 24v so went for the GSR14.4 VE-2.
What a machine!!! ::)

Here’s the geeky bit.  (Warning!!! the following may bore you to tears!) ???
In a previously life I use to develop software to produce data analysis models :-[
So, downloaded the specifications of a whole load of makes & models and created a comparison table ::)
The resulting data gave a direct comparison for power/weight ratio* and a factored value for VFM (value for money) ;D
In short, I was hoping DeWalt would come out top because they look the Muts Nuts :o
However, they scored poorly.  The Bosch Pro range (Those ending with VE-2) wear miles ahead, scoring 1st 2nd & 3rd 8)
* = This value showed which units were light as a feather but powerful enough to break your wrist. (well, almost) ;)
