Title: Shower replacement....part P?
Post by andymac on Jan 30th, 2005, 12:02pm

I have an electric shower to replace. It should be just a straight swap, apart from re-routing the pipework slightly.

Now I don't think this will come under Part P, being a straight swap with no additional wiring or installations but I just want to be sure.

Any comments most welcome...

A shower is an appliance, so isn't covered by part P.

it would come under part P as it connects to the fixed wiring infrastructure.

BUT, and a big BUT, is that its a straight swap, and so dosnt come under part p i dont think...

does this mean changing your cooker now comes under part P as this is hard wired to the fixed wiring?

where does it all end  :'(

It might be a straight swap but how do you know that it's been wired up correctly in the first place? The supplementary bonding might also be non existant and could be dangerous when in use.

If the user gets a shock and dies then they'll be straighy round knocking on your door.

My views would be to get an electrician in and get a copy of a certificate from him, then it's down to him.

A straight swap, like for like, even in kitchens and bathrooms does not have to be notified. thats definate, to many sites are giving out conflicting advise including CORGI try contacting the ECA

I agree that nobody is likely to check. The only concern  is that if you sold your house and it burned down you might have to explain how your finger prints got somewhere they shouldn't. Yes I know it's unlikely but fire prevention is one of the main reasons for the new regs so it must happen to somebody..

just been reading this here thread, and as per usual good thread, sound advise(where possible with part p, and the usual smuttering of wise cracks and comments....
BUT.. if one of the main area's of part p is fire prevention, then why does this contry still allow gas appliances with out auto shut off sensors, which are cheap items to fit....(by the manufacturers) with all these trips/mcb's,-d's etc leccy is by far the safest form of utility!!!

PART P is like the "u" bend on our toilet, i still can not get my head around the thinking behind it all!!!!! ??? ???
