I understand that the Building Regs require window reveals to be insulated.

What's the best way to do this on a brick and block house where the internal blocks will be wet plastered?

If you use polyurathane foam sheet and plaster board on the reveal is there a problem of cracking were that joins the rest of the plaster on the face of the wall?

How would you do the head of an arched window?

Cavity closers are available for the gap between the inner blockwork and the outer brickwork. These are usually an insulation filled plastic moulding which also acts as a vertical dpc.

These can be directly plastered over as long as they are well fixed down their length where they overlap the blockwork. The brickwork edge is usually held in place by the frame or can be glued if required (Gripfill type).

We often plasterboard over these prior to plastering (depending on the job) and we normally use 12.5mm plasterboard (uninsulated) which is then plastered as if it was blockwork, i.e. standard bead + Hardwall + Multifinish.

If you intend to use insulated plasterboard on the reveals (as maybe used on dot/dab system) then the insulation has to be cut back on one edge so that only plasterboard is visible on the external corner. :)

Arched window head done the same way if the arch also shows internally (lots of arched windows have flat lintels internally)

Run the cavity insulation straight through, then plasterboard over.

but what stops the plasterboard 'flapping' across the cavity? Modern cavities are 75mm+ so the plasterboard will not be rigid where it meets the frame. (other than glueing it to the frame edge)

Yes the arch shows on the inside. I assume you can't get bendy insulated plasterboard to go around the arch?

No but if you cut a strip of plasterboard for the arch reveal and score marks across on one side at say 3" apart then snap that side of the board on each score to make a kind of concertina board, this can be dabbed to the head and bonded and an arched bead attached before skimming. Just started a job today that has a few arched windows and am not sure how I am gonna get around them as it is in block and a propermess!! :-/
