Title: What material do i put under shower tray?
Post by Ian_Reynolds on Feb 24th, 2005, 10:31am

Normally I'd buy some 12mm marine ply, but in B&Q last night the salesman claims they only have WBP board or 15mm cement board. I told him I'd swerve on the WBP board, but he claimed that this cement board is made for putting under shower trays ...despite it saying on the board that it's a tile board....

Out of idle curiosity, is this cement board any good, and could it be used under a 800x800 quadrant stone resin shower tray in place of Marine Ply???

12mm marine ply? I use 18mm as I thought that was the minimum.

Are we talking about 12mm ply on top of bare joists?

If so its far too small, as HM says minimum 18mm but if the floor is getting tiled I would always put in 25mm

Hmmm, sorry about that, it was a typo error. It's actually 22mm I use not 12mm. Mind you it didn't stop me measuring some spare I have last night just out of curiosity.

I wouldn't use cement board to bed a shower base on it's just not strong enough.
To all intents and purposes its only cement(surprised :o) with a mesh in the surface layer.
As the other guys said minimum of 18mm ply is required.

It's fine for tiling though fixes and cuts just like plasterboard.
