Title: Lack of plaster...
Post by Lectrician on Oct 25th, 2004, 7:52am

OK, re-wallpapering my bedroom......A previous owner has moved the stud wall, and the new plasterboard has not been skimmed, simply wallpapered with wood chip.  Is this a common 'cheap' way to go??  I wanted to strip and re-paper.

it is a common way for tight arses to go, but you're goin to have a job on your hands if you think that you will be able to strip the paper easily  ;)

yeah save yourself the hassle, break the plasterboard off and buy in new sheets, ½ of its gonna come away by the time you've scraped at it for hours anyway.

If the plasterboard was sealed before wallpapering you might be in with a chance. Suggest you try stripping a bit behind the door first, you might just be lucky and it will come off.

Leave the old up and fit the new over the top, good for insulation and sound proofing.

What's the pro's and con's of just skimming over the existing wallpaper - just add plenty of Unibond?

the saturated wall paper may well fall off, along with all your new plaster  :-[

TT are you nuts  :P never ever plaster over paper. it ain't done ever. the plaster stays wet for maybe 24 hours, now what happens to wallpaper when you soak it?? yep it comes off, so when it comes off it's going to bring the plaster with it, plaster won't adhere to wallpaper.
