Has anybody wired phones in domestic premises using cat5. ?
Are there products available to support this ?
Ive been asked to wire phones in a largish house (along with other work),thought of using cat5 to future proof ???????? but i dont know if i can.

grateful for any advice ?

I'm almost sure it can be done - but you need "mod taps " for the phones to work in the RJ45 socket.
I'm not sure 110% that it will work on a domestic line as I have only done it on PBX systems and Centrex lines fed via fiber into a PDH transmission switch (NOKIA)
There is no reason why it won't work on a residential line but I haven't actually done it - and I've done quite a bit in transmissions and telephony.

2 chances bloke... it'll work or it fookin' won't!

Cat 5 cable can be used, but I would not suggest terminating into Cat 5 sockets unless there is no other option.

in big office installs they use cat5 cable and sockets for phones to avoid dedicateing runs

admittedly the phones in question are often TDMA not PSTN though

btw the most popular forms of ethernet only use 2 pairs so you can run phone and network down the same cat5

the requirements for networking are)
10baseT-2 pairs at least cat3
100baseT4-4 pairs at least cat3
100baseTX-2 pairs at least cat5
1000baseTX-4 pairs i'm not sure what type of cable

100baseT4 never caught on and 1000baseTX is only seen at the high end

Cat5 or 6 is a good move. Voice over IP (VoIP) is coming.

A structured network is great to distribute telephone and fax either by PSTN, PBX or ISDN, and also (of course) to connect computer equipment together. It allows charing of the ISDN or ADSL(broadband) connection over the network aswell.

Voice over IP has a long way to go.

Yes agreed VoIP has some way to go, but BT have announced that soon all their voice traffic (eg between exchanges not to the house yet!) will be switched over to VoIP.

..and this type of service allows you to make VoIP calls free over the internet. I understand it works well if both parties have broadband and a local LAN.

heard about this voIP today as it happens, was looking for a new headset and someone had mentioned it, they said www.1899.com was good, off to see what it is now... lol

Try and watch this weeks Click Online program on BBC24. It's got a long section on VoIP.

These days you don't even need a PC to make VoIP calls. You can get handsets that plug straight into a LAN socket. You can also get broadband routers that have a phone socket on them to allow an ordinary phone to be used - you could even plug in a DECT cordless base station phone into one of those and make cordless VoIP calls from the garden.

That 1899 looks pretty reasonable for calling home, for me. It is the same as i pay now for phone cards but they are a pain in the ar*e because you have to keep popping down to the shop to buy 1 every now and again. Have any of you tried it yet? I don't want to give them my credit card details before knowing they are safe.
