Title: Which type of zone valve ?
Post by molerat on Mar 24th, 2005, 12:35am

My 20 year old Sunvic zone valves are dieing of old age so am about to replace them.  Which type are best for reliability and total lifespan, the rotating valve type as in Sunvic etc or the ball type like Honeywell, or are they much the same ?

The rubber ball type are best in my opinion, but you may find your Sunvics need power to close whereas ball types are shut manually by a spring, so you may find it dificult to sort out on the wiring front

Thanks for your opinion.  My old ones are spring return so no problems there.  :)

I agree with PVM, in my opinion can't beat the Honeywell stuff. Easy to replace parts on too when the motor gives up.

Sunvic make two types.

One which needs power  to hold it open, as others do, & uses a spring to close when the power is turned off. TTo operate this, you only need a programmer/thermostat with a normally open contact.

The other only uses power when it opens or closes; it does not use energy to hold it open. Needs a changeover contact to operate.
