Title: Re: structural engineer cost? Post by WOLF on Jan 19th, 2006, 12:15am depends on the amount of structure above, and how much of the building you wish to remove, as well as the placement of the steelwork within the remaining structure!!!.. material property is made from, also single skin, cavity wall?? all these make a difference to what is going to have to be allowed for!!! just to give you some idea! calcs for my place, 3 stories, cavity, wire cuts(solid-dense bricks)outer skin , conc block inner skin taking 1/2 roof loading as rear wall, cost me £400 abot 5 years ago now!! 2 pages calcs, needed 2 LARGE RSJ's due to roof loadings!! |
Title: Re: structural engineer cost? Post by JerryD on Jan 19th, 2006, 12:59am I sometimes need to get calcs done quick (like over the phone) and I use a local guy who also does drawings for extension work. I can get him to do a calc in less than 5 minutes (if it's not too complex to describe over the phone) and for that he would normally charge £70 + vat. If it's complex and he has to make site visits then £170 + vat minimum for the first steel and £70 per steel after that. It's money for old rope for simple stuff imho, if I gave him 5 minutes advice over the phone and charged him £70 + vat he'd have a fit! |
Title: Re: structural engineer cost? Post by CWatters on Jan 19th, 2006, 4:43pm Just had a bill from my Structural Engineer... His company charges around... Senior Eng - £60 an hour Tech Eng - £20 an hour I believe the senior Engineer does all the calculations and the Tech does the drawings. You might have to add travelling costs to that if you want a site visit. |
Title: Re: structural engineer cost? Post by nyck on Jan 19th, 2006, 7:55pm Sorry its a cavity wall The 2 RSJ's i had in my extension welded plates on ends plus bolted 600 centres were £200 + VAT + as you say £100+ for Strutual calc's Wouldn't it be cheaper for me to use 2 catnics and get them to workout the calculations thanks nyck |
Title: Re: structural engineer cost? Post by WOLF on Jan 19th, 2006, 11:55pm No, if you go to CATNIC, direct they get there structural bloke to call, mega bucks!!, plus a catnic, is not as good as an RSJ .. in my opinion that is!!! |
