To the professional painters out there, my Mum has an old boy who comes round and paints for £10 an hour.

This seems really cheap to me. What do you boys reckon? Do you charge hourly or as a day rate? Or per job?

This is just a figure pulled from memory and the only useful information is that it is the particular painter's rate for a particular job and client. Others will have different rates, terms, conditions, situations, clients, etc. Right disclaimer over ;), now for the details....

A friend of mine is getting her dining and living room painted. The decorator is charging £80/day and has said it will take 3 days. This is in an affluent part of South Manchester.

£10 an hour and £80 per day, roughly the same thing really. It's cheap, but then it all depends on how long they will take to do the job.

I have been painting for a while now, I wish I could paint a dining and living room in three days. ???

Does this 3-day Manchester job include prepping, one or two coats or what?

you can't paint 1 room in 3 days??????????????

just paint no paper??????????????

would have thot that was plenty of time. would have imagined it would only take a day or 2.

but then i am just a spark and absolutely hopeless at painting :)

if you used a spray gun I'm sure you could paint a room in less than an hour

3 days! my a*se! :P

Maybe SP, but thats called "toshing" it out, now to paint a room, that is a different thing altogether!! is it not Hammey dear chap, rubbing down, filling (waiting for fillers to dry!) re-rubbing down , de-nibbing the first coats etc etc etc!!!!! ???

ive seen enough results from "ONE COAT WONDER painters before, all to often!!!! gloss straight over existing, no prep, peels off just about the time the cheque clears!!!! >:( >:( >:(

and spray painting , requires many coats, so takes about the same, can if used correctly be more of a uniformed finish!!!!!!! sprayed a workshop of mine once, Mag emulsion, what hassle, should of just rollered it!!!!!

oh and Hammey, have you used those fancy extra wide rollers the dec's use now ... one on job the other day, 2 foot wide roller for the emulsion (and tray to suit...before its said!!!) whipped over the entire wall in a few mins!!!! :o :o :o

I was taking it as a dining/living room rather than 2 seperate rooms.

And I meant doing the job properly Wolf not 2 coats of emulsion and 1 of gloss with no prep :P

if it is only painting would have thot 3 days would do 2 rooms no???????????

We're all talking about a job here that no-one has seen Scotty, no-one knows how big, we don't even know if it's one room or two. We don't know how many coats of paint are required, or if the rooms are going to be empty or furnished. Sashes could be plastic, ie no painting, or wood, painting. ???

If the guy turns out a full days work for £80 then someone is getting a result, (assuming it's of a good standard.)

Affluent part of Manchester, and still after a cheap job. ::)

Bit big for me that roller Wolfie, it would take longer to wash out than it would to paint the wall, though having said that, it might be more cost effective to bin it.
