Title: Heat resistant wallcovering
Post by jokenrick on Feb 4th, 2006, 6:17pm

We have just installed a new chimney breast and gas fire and the plaster on the chimney breast has cracked because it gets very hot when the fire is on.  Are there any types of wallpaper that we could use that would remain fixed to the chimney breast when the fire is on.  I was told that there are some fibreglass wallpapers but have been unable to find a stockist.  If I put lining paper up it just keeps peeling off.

Welcome to the website dear boy. Off the top of my head MAV Wallcoverings make a tough lining paper called Wallrock Fibre liner, which might be what you need. Their website appears to be down at the moment, so can't check, and I cant find it in my cupboard.

Will have a look and post results tomorrow.

Found this;

If it's only just been installed I would wait some weeks to see if the plaster settles down. Fill the cracks and they may not come back.

:)Thanks for the quick responses.  As we have already tried to fill in the cracks and have left them for 3 months, I think I will look at using the lining paper suggested.  If you can find out where to get the MAV paper I would appreciate it.  Thanks again.

you will have to do a phone directory job, as the web site is down for reconstruction but ..
..Mav Wallcoverings Ltd, Unit 38/39 Corringham Road, Corringham Road Industrial Estate, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, DN21 1QB, UK  ....

and for when it is running.. http://www.mavwallcoverings.co.uk

Jokenrick, have you tried clicking on the link in my above post?  They will send it to you.

If you don't fancy that, find a trade shop (decorating) and they will order it for you. They don't tend to stock it as it is not called for as much as lining paper. Also, don't forget the adhesive, as I think it has it's own.

:)Thanks to everyone who replied.  I have tried the link and it is now working so will order through that.  What a great website this is - I have spent weeks asking for advice with no joy and yet within a couple of hours of posting my question have got some help.  Thanks again.
