Title: lowering kerb Post by supersteve on Feb 11th, 2006, 3:17pm i have a drive way big enough for 2 cars but only access for one so im thinking about lowering the kerb in the street, can i just go ahead and do this? id imagine id need some sort of permission or would this be work the council would do themself and id need to pay them for? |
Title: Re: lowering kerb Post by big_all on Feb 11th, 2006, 4:03pm you are very unlikly to be able to do it yourself you do need permision usualy the council do it [or recognised companys] i think about £200 is a reasonable figure to work round the only way to find out is to ask your local council there was a thread about this recently but i cant find it ::) |
Title: Re: lowering kerb Post by WOLF on Feb 11th, 2006, 5:48pm i do not want to upset any of you guys here, but Sevenoaks DC in Kent, wants just shy of £1000 for a single width dropped kerb!!!!!! how ever you can do it your self, if you can show them that you have a £5.000,000 (yep MILLION) liability insurance policy, and are certified for highways agency work!!!!! but the next big council down the county, it is free!!?? just don't make sense!! do it!!!! SO DEFINATELY CHECK with the local dc, and GET IT IN WRITTING!!!!!! >:( |
Title: Re: lowering kerb Post by JerryD on Feb 11th, 2006, 6:43pm If you do it yourself the council/highways will 99% definately condemn it. They have very strict regulations on dropped kerbs and in my experience, it's not worth trying to do it yourself. You have to be able to make good the road tarmac and the pavement ashphalt too, not easy unless you have access to this kinda stuff. Just pay the fee and it's guaranteed to be done to spec with no come-back to you. The last one I did (had done) cost me about £200 in High Wycombe (about 15 years ago) so maybe have to double that now? £1,000 seems a bit OTT. It takes two guys about 4 hours + the cost of buying the kerbs. |
Title: Re: lowering kerb Post by WOLF on Feb 11th, 2006, 6:57pm where can you buy these guys from JD, as when the last one in my road was done last year, it took 3 blokes 2 complete days!!!!!! |
Title: Re: lowering kerb Post by scotspark on Feb 11th, 2006, 7:24pm my mum just got her kerb dropped for the new driveway. she contacted local council who gave her permission and a couple of approved contractors. they wanted between £800 and a £1000. she got someone else who done it for £300 - £400 and someone from council came out and inspected and said it was ok. this is scotland tho |
