I decided on grounds of economy not to have a new plasterboard ceiling plastered (the joints are all very neat and it's a utility room)

I had heard one could use PVA but having read what others have said on this forum I think I'll go for diluting 1st coat but the question is how dilute?

I was thinking of using vinyl matt because it can be wiped with damp cloth (ceiling is sloping - 8' down to 3' -so will inevitably get marked)

Would appreciate guidance please. :)

Vinyl matt is ok. Thin with up to 10 % clean water for the first coat, and if the paint is fairly thick, it won't hurt to just ease the second coat a little bit as well.

There is no need to PVA, do what hamilton says, use emulsion as a sealer/miscoat, I get the impression its unpainted, and plasterboard soaks up the first coat, so might pay you to add a tad more water, if you think its too thin, then you can always add a bit more paint. :)

Vinyl Matt is okay over plasterboard, or a skim plaster, you will be okay.
