Title: covering versus replacing cracked ceiling Post by annie57 on Apr 29th, 2007, 8:31pm our lounge ceiling is not attractive. it is cracked in some areas and stained following a very mini flood.to make it better iv been advised to 1. totally replace the ceiling or 2. cover with plaster board or 3. cover with fibre lining paper then wallpaper over. i prefer option 3 for reason of less mess and speed but what should i do? :-? |

Title: Re: covering versus replacing cracked ceiling Post by woodsmith on May 1st, 2007, 6:47am It's difficult to say without actually seeing how bad it is :-/ 1 Will make a LOT of mess, only worth doing if the original is literally falling off. 2 A good option if the ceiling has lost its integrity, that is some holes and bits falling down. 3 Do you want a wallpapered ceiling? A blown vinyl wallpaper will cover small cracks and stains. If it isn't too bad the best bet is to get a plasterer to give it a skim coat, he will PVA the existing ceiling and skim a thin layer of plaster. Find a good plasterer and it isn't too messy and not too expensive either. Hope this helps |

The fibre lining is not a quick option because you will apply the fibre lining one day, the lining paper the next day and paint it on the third day. As Woody says you might as well get it skimmed over with plaster, that will take one day. When it's dry emulsion it with one mist (thin) coat and two full coats. No need to line a new ceiling. Come to think of it, I dont think you have to line over the fibre, you can emulsion straight on it. Either way, for best results, skim it. |

Dont ask me what went wrong, something to do with malicious thingys, lost my micrasoft things, lost everything, but its back to normal, for the time being anyway. ;D In answer to Annie's question, I'm with hammy on this one. ;D As the time Annie faffs and farts about getting a sealer on the stains, preping the cracks, trust me I have done loads of ceilings for people rather than get them skimmed, and there is a lot of work involved. Then doing the fibre, then the lining, then the painting, its more trouble than its worth. Best way to go is skim, then its done and out the way. |
