I've used some stain block paint from Wickes to cover some marks on some walls (e.g. black plastic scrape marks).

I've put three coats of emulsion over these stain block paint patches now but they are still shining though.

Any ideas please?! :-/

It's no good adding more emulsion if the stain is coming through, you need more coats of the stain stop paint. I've had jobs where two or three coats of stain stop are needed prior to emulsioning.

Hi Jerry D. It's not the stain that's showing through - it's the patch of stain block paint.

It's oil-based so it's shiny and no amount of emulsion seems to dull it down.

Oh! So the stain block is now the stain!

Hmmmmmm............

Perhaps sand it to dull it then re-emulsion?

Yeah, weird, isn't it!

I did sand the stain block lightly before applying the first coat of emulsion but I was thinking if I did it now I'd just sand off the emulsion on top and get down to the b!$&dy stain block again.

I wish I'd never used the stuff. >:(

I've had a similar problem, I think it changes the surface texture and that is what you can see, rather than a colour difference. In the end I gave the whole ceiling a thin coat of stain block and then emulsioned and it was fine.

I think you're right woodsmith. Now that everything's dried off it's not as noticeable and in certain lights you can't see it. It got rid of the stains though!
