Title: Painting Silk/Matt

I am about to paint my lounge ceiling.

It is currently painted in what I assume to be a vinyl silk - glossy.

I want to simply paint it with a matt white.

Can I paint directly over the top? Never been into painting - It is my dreaded DIY chore!
