THE WOOD IS MDF WHICH WAS PROFESSIONALY SPRAYED.
I HAVE NOW PAINTED OVER THIS USING A GLOSS CUPBOARD PAINT.

A gloss paint wouldn't normally need a protective coating, it is matt paint that marks easily.

If you are finding the paint chips easily you could try coating a small area with a clear gloss varnish and see if that helps

Or you could try going to a place that does spray paint for cars, they should sell something called Clearcoat. It is the stuff they spray over the coloured/metallic paint on most cars.
