Hi - anyone help me with a small problem - i install a lot of fitted furniture in pine chalets and am always having to cut existing skirting to fit cabinets. It is not always good to remove an entire length and refit when cut - so - is there an easy way of cutting in place. have tried jigsaw with short blade and using tenon saw to start followed by chisel etc - any gadgets out there to help??

you can use a normal blade in a jigsaw but the front off the base can mark the wall/skirting
you just simply fully stretch the blade. base plate as far back as possible
press the nose off the base plate tight against the skirting/wall start 1mm above the floor reasonable speed tilt back and cut holding very firmly aim to cut into the plaster about 10mm and reposition the saw about 40mm higher or cut into plaster around 5mm and reposition 20mm

i have shortened a 1o1d to 20mm with flat end for cutting floor boards in situ without dammaging services the secret is maximum pendulum full speed slow feed rate

perhaps you could use the method above for the bottom and finnish with your cut off blade!!!

you could use somthing like the multimaster or the bosch 180e equivilent

other choices are recipricating saws with a long blade and a batton screwed to the waste side

i personaly when i build furniture either allow enough space to scribe to the skirting or taper from front to back about 1 to 1.5 degrees so the top sits against the wall
if theres a carpet grip i double the angle

A Fein Multimaster or Bosch 180e will do the job quickly and neatly. If you use one you will wonder how you managed without one for all these years ;)

Hi sawdust and welcome to the forum, if you need to cut back a lot of skirting etc, why not get a Fein multi master..... i know they are a bit of hard earned cash to start with, but you will wonder how you have coped so far with out one, once you start using it!!

Another vote from me for the Multimaster, the Bosch is far cheaper but nothing like as good from what I've heard.

Fein make a battery version if you have to work where there is no power, even more expensive though ::)

The Fein is good, and before mine blew up I'd have had no compunctions about recommending it to you.

I have bought the cheaper Bosch item but have yet to try it out.

Might be an idea to try the Bosch first to see if you get on with it.

Then go for the more expensive Fein Mulitmaster 'Top' model with all the attachments included - It's cheaper than buying them singly.

I have the bosch

no complaints great bit of kit

they now also do a cordless version

fein might be better (I Dont know) but joiner told me one of his blades was £36!!!!!!!!!!!

if my Fein ever went wrong, and it does get some abuse, id buy another, as i have destryed a Bosch, within 9 months, was not overly impresssed with it!!!!!!!!!!

an as for the blades, the fein last about 10 times as long as the cheaper bosch steel.... so worth the extra cost, and if your mate is paying £36 a blade, SP, i;d seriously get him to shop around!!!

Another point to note is that the blades fit both machines, so if you want to use cheap(er) blades you can.
A £36 blade is probably a diamond blade, not your normal saw blades (around £8 to £14 a blade, less if you buy bulk).

Thanks for all your replies - somehow missed out on this gadget - have already bought bosch and used several times - works great on skirting - also used for trimming slightly overlength screws and cutting recess for door catch - very versatile and look forward to finding more uses - cheers
