Title: Hanging a small cabinet in the bathroom Post by acidjazz on Feb 26th, 2009, 4:20pm I need to hang a small cabinet over a toilet. I have only found one stud. Even though I have measured out at 16" and 24", I have not found a second stud. I am afraid to install a wall anchor because I don't want to accidentally hit any plumbing pipes. Any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks for any replies. |

Title: Re: Hanging a small cabinet in the bathroom Post by Lectrician on Feb 26th, 2009, 9:06pm Pipework is just as likely to be passing through a stud as it is the void ;-) |
Title: Re: Hanging a small cabinet in the bathroom Post by CWatters on Feb 27th, 2009, 9:42pm Put a 12mm depth stop on the drill? ..or turn the stud locator to "metal". |
Title: Re: Hanging a small cabinet in the bathroom Post by scotspark on Mar 1st, 2009, 1:52pm if its a platerboard wall just poke thru with a small screwdriver to check before making hole for fixing anchor SIMPLE oh and your best to use a setting gun for those anchors Scotspark |

And don't rely on a stud/pipework locator to find pipes behind plasterboard, unless you are 100% sure it can. Go test it using a scrap of plasterboard & a bit of pipe, be prepared to be disappoonted! |
Title: Re: Hanging a small cabinet in the bathroom Post by Twobarrows on Mar 6th, 2009, 9:18pm Oh, nearly forgot, if you want to be super safe, then don't use any screws at all, just silicone it to the wall. |

Before anyone tries this! I assumeTwobarrows is just joking because it may be safe from the possibility of drilling through a cable, but not so safe when the plaster gives way and it comes off the wall :o |
Title: Re: Hanging a small cabinet in the bathroom Post by Twobarrows on Mar 7th, 2009, 9:48pm If your walls are that bad then you really want to replaster! On a good wall there is nothing wrong with siliconing 'light duty' items to the wall, been doing it for donkey's years. On tiles it is superb. |
Title: Re: Hanging a small cabinet in the bathroom Post by woodsmith on Mar 8th, 2009, 8:09am The original poster wanted to mount a cupboard on the wall, not a light duty item. I agree very light items can be fixed to tiles with silicon but I have worked in too many houses where the finish plaster looks fine but has not adhered properly to the backing to trust it for fixing anything to the wall. |

A 'small cabinet' he said, that's light duty. I agree that if the plaster is blown / cracked then it is doomed, but on a good finish it works fine. |
