Title: 110V -> 480V Post by marc on Jun 1st, 2009, 8:05pm Hi, I need to convert 110V AC to 480V AC (no current - like a big Capacitor). So far I could not find the right transformer for that task. My Question is wether I can use a ballast for luminiscent Lights (converts to ~600V) and a dimmer to adjust the voltage to what I need. If this doesn't work I would appeciate any suggestions... Cheers Marc |
Title: Re: 110V -> 480V Post by sparxxxx on Jun 2nd, 2009, 8:50am All depends on what your intentions are. First thing that comes to mind is two 110/240 TX's connected in series. |
Title: Re: 110V -> 480V Post by CWatters on Jun 2nd, 2009, 9:36am I think you can get a 480V to 120V control transformer. Should be possible to run it backwards. Watch you don't kill yourself. |
Title: Re: 110V -> 480V Post by Zambezi on Jun 2nd, 2009, 10:24am What CWatters said. May be a bit expensive trying to find a transformer to do this though because I doubt they would make little ones, those voltages would normally be used in heavy industry. I could be completely wrong of course :-? You do get variacs etc that change the voltage but I have not come across one that does that voltage before (not that I have ever looked). |

Sorry if this is very late but kinda give you a head up with this. This type of transfomer is common in North American useage however let me give you a head up if you run backward you will have issue with voltage like example 120 volts incomming and outgoing at 480 however it will not land at excat 480 it will creep up more toward to 500 volts { I been there more than once } But once you boost it up you need to ground one leg on secondary side otherwise you will get wacky voltage reading.
