Hi all, not sure if this should be in here or in Decorating/Tiling etc.

I'm about to make a new chest of drawers as part of some bedroom furniture in the next few months. It/they will be made from wood, and I want it to be a really high gloss black finish similar to the Japanese black lacquered finish you see on some furniture from that area.

Has anyone ever used it? Where do you get it from? Any tips in it's use?

The only practical way is to spray, you can use car paint, but he preparation is paramount because every even slight mark will stand out. When I made a case for a musical instrument I used MDF and covered it in car body filler, I smoothed that to a fine finish then sprayed. It was an awful lot of work.

A few years ago I made a very big front door for someone who wanted one "Like they have at 10 Downing Street." As everyone knows it's a VERY shiny, deep black.

I just painted it with Crown gloss black, having given it a couple of coats of aluminium based primer, giving it a rub down between coats at all stages until the finish was as smooth as the proverbial, which was a nightmare in the workshop both from dust and small flies, but it looked the business.

Like Woodsmith says, it's a lot of work. He's probably right to suggest car paint because it will go off quicker and give more of a 'lacquered' look, But you'll still need to rub it down between coats, for which I prefer to use finer grades of wire wool.

It was oak, by the way.

Urushi Varnish tinted with pigment is the traditional way. But as Woodsmith says 2 part car paint and then buff it out, Will be a lot easier on large surfaces.

I've also sprayed with matt black and then gone over that with gloss waterborne lacquer, this gives a good depth to the finish

You might find good advice in a Hayes car body repair manual! Getting a mirror gloss finish is a lot of hard work and messy using finer and finer grades of wet and dry paper used wet with blocks.

Hard paint helps. Car body paints in aerosol cans seem to be much softer than the paint the professionals use in a spray gun so you really need to get the kit. One option might be to use two part epoxy paints that model aircraft builders use. These set pretty hard. Been 15 years since I used them though.

Woodsmith, am I right in assuming that you used MDF, covered with car body filler to reduce the amount of movement that would otherwise be present in natural timber, thereby eliminating the chances of the paint covered body filler cracking?

No, it was to get that mirror perfect finish including over the fibrous edge. I don't think you would get much cracking over MDF
