I had a water drip in loft and it left a 9 inch watermark on the plasterboard ceiling, I seem to remember a similar thing from years ago and when painted the stain eventually came through again. Is there something to coat the stain with first, before painting.

Stainblock, is the stuff. Like you say the mark will show through if you don't seal it.
