Title: Traditional INTERNAL shutter furniture?
Post by Joiner on Oct 25th, 2009, 12:24pm

I've been asked to make some traditional internal shutters. No problem on the woodworking side and the butterfly hinges are readily available, but I'm buggered if I can find the closer, which is pivoted on the one half of the shutters, hinged and comes across the two shutters to lock into a hook fastener on the other half of the shutters. It's invariably of flat plate about 1 1/2" to 2" width.

I've spent the morning searching the web and come up with nothing. Any of you lot reckon you can help? Even a picture would be useful so that I can actually SHOW what I'm looking for on other forums.

I made some shutters a couple of weeks ago, trouble is I already had the catch and must have bought it years ago, sorry no idea where I got it.

I do have a picture though, if this what you need?

Umm..aren't those sash fixings?  I think Joiners' after something like this.

I used the search terms 'shutter fittings'

They are sash fixings, but i've often seen them used for shutters. Although, come to think of it, Joiner probably has hundreds of them, so I expect it's the catches you've linked to that he wants.

I should have searched for "shutter bars" then there are loads of options.

Go to the top of the class LM. That's exactly what I was looking for.

Although the ones I had in mind are a bit more detailed, these will do admirably.

Christ, what a difference that one bloody word makes!

The price is excellent too. My blacksmith phoned me last night to say that he's made dozens of them over the years and could make them for around £35, which I thought was good, but twelve quid... no arguing with that.

Thanks.

And thanks Keith, but you are right, I've got rather a lot of those catches. Never thought to use them on shutters though, so worth keeping in mind if any smaller shutters come in.
