Title: Hinges Post by Sandy on Dec 2nd, 2009, 2:20pm Hi all, Just looking for any tips/thoughts on hinges and info of a web based supplier of good quality hinges. I'm making a jewellery box for a Christmas pressie and have almost finished it, but I've got a few more coats of oil to go before parting the lid from the base. However, I've committed a schoolboy error and not yet considered how to hinge the lid and base (other than I know it's to be hinged). The only hinged options I can think of are a decorative hinge on the outer back side of the box with screws driven in from the outside towards the inside, or, hinges that will be set into and "sandwiched" between the lid and base. I'd prefer the hinges sandwiched between the lid and based, but the side wall timbers are only 8mm thick, so the hinges need to be fairly small. Anyone any thoughts, or links to a website that can deliver good quality hinges? Thanks in advance. Alex. |
Title: Re: Hinges Post by big_all on Dec 2nd, 2009, 2:48pm definatly place on the outside face as if you try and fit the hinges on the 8mm face you will be overhanging out side and in your restricting yourself to quite specialist hinges that take no2 or3 screws as you wont get less than 12mm in no4 screws although if you use brass screws and not too thin brass hinges then you could file off the point off the screw and only have a very small brass dot showing try woodfit or isaac lord |
Title: Re: Hinges Post by CWatters on Dec 3rd, 2009, 1:21pm Not sure how small these are but they are for pen boxes.. http://www.craft-supplies.co.uk/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/IB719%7C%7C@c%20Wooden%20Boxes%20@b%7C0%7Cuser%7C%7C11%7C Not easy to use I suspect. There must be several companies that sell decorative hinges for music boxes and the like. Google found these but perhaps a bit cheap?.. http://www.shop4musicboxes.co.uk/music-box-hinge-18309-301-p.asp On my model aircraft.. Instead of tiny screws, I've drilled holes right through and inserted pins or tiny nails. A tiny drop of superglue in the hole on the inside wicks into the wood to secure them. Hard to get out again mind. |
