Title: Pantry door problem.
Post by Mensch on Mar 31st, 2010, 4:08am

We recently moved into a 6 year old house. After just a few weeks, we are really getting annoyed by a poorly laid out pantry door that opens out into the microwave. The microwave is immediately next to the pantry. The pantry has double doors of a cabinet style matching the rest of the cabinets and look really nice. However, the pantry doors are at a 45 degree angle and open out into the microwave. The pantry doors have already been damaged by opening them when the microwave door wasn't all the way closed, and the microwave door is likewise at risk for getting broken.

Is there any way to preserve the look of cabinet doors on a walk in pantry, but have them open inward rather then opening outward? I have a picture of this in my album.

I think it would be hard to get the doors to open inwards and they would look odd.  Two solutions I can see...

a) Put a chain on the top of the pantry door so it can't open far enough to hit the microwave.

or perhaps..

b) Remove the hinges from the right hand door and fix the right hand door to the left hand door. eg so you have one large pantry door that looks like two doors when closed. It might need the hinges upgrading if the resulting door is too heavy. Would also need to check that the right hand edge would clear the microwave door handle.

the only solution i can see is to connect the doors by a piano hinge remove the hinges at the appliance side and possibly add to/strengthen the hinges on the other side

so you now have a bifold door so just make shure you fold it as you open

have you got a picture off the hinges and what thickness are the doors!!

great minds think alike  ::) ;D

Is it stating the obvious if I suggested moving the microwave?
