hi there i am new to the forum and i was wondering how i would go about wiring a light switch and a receptacle with the switch first but not controlling the receptacle? thank you

Are you trying to add a light to a power circuit?

Or a socket to a light circuit?

What ever they are trying to day, it doesn't sound like it is in the UK :)

there is already a light i am trying to add a plug to it without having the light switch turn the plug on and off.

assuming your in the uk and assuming you only have 2 wires or 2 wires and an earth you cant take a feed from there as "A" you only have the live wire from the lighting circuit returning to the light no neutral
"B" its a lighting circuit off around 6 amps

are you in the uk and what was the power for??

sorry i never even thought to mention i'm in canada. its for a washing machine.

I don't know if anyone on this forum is familiar with Canadian wiring practice.

Wikipedia suggests your lighting circuit might rated at 15A 120V = 1800W. Many UK washing machines draw more than that and I suspect it's the same over there. eg so you would probably trip the circuit breaker even if it wasn't against the regulations.

Best get an electrician in to look at it.

i checked into it and a washing machine is required to have at a 15amp breaker with nothing else on the line
