Title: Hardcore
Post by JohnD on Oct 26th, 2011, 8:51am

What type of hardcore should I need under a concrete garage floor, and come to that a kitchen floor? Specifications just say 'hardcore free of Hardcore to be of approved broken brick or similar approved, free from wood plaster or other deleterious matter.'

Not sure what to specify as my local builders merchants don't do broken brick.  I guess hoggin isn't suitable.

Mot 1?

Thanks

John D

Almost every builders merchant will be able to supply something to meet MOT Type 1. Even BnQ and ebay sell it at a price.  It can be made of different materials but I believe the best is made from crushed limestone. Sometimes it's made from crushed recycled concrete or road scalpings. If it's from a reputable source and they say it's MOT Type 1 is should be ok. MOT is a bit easier to level and compact than a load of old bricks and rubble.

A proper job might have a layer of sand on top and then a DPM/plastic sheet before conc is poured. Even if you don't need a DPC DPM the plastic stops water running out of the concrete and helps maintain the right ratio while it sets.

"Even if you don't need a DPC the plastic stops water running out of the concrete and helps maintain the right ratio while it sets."

Shouldn't that be DPM? A typo methinks. Rare for you.

In older buildings without a DPC (Damp Proof Course) it can cause problems that aren't easily cured because moisture is directed towards the walls.

Aggregate will stop ground moisture rising into the slab - as long as the water table isn't above the height at which it finishes, of course!
